My 1st experience in a failed rock concert !

Posted by Rojit on October 30, 2011

This blog post is specially written (with a broken heart and a dejected soul) to bereave  myself for the Metallica fiasco yesterday. It was like – (out of too many things) an angel smilingly coming down from heaven and caressing my face and then slapping me hard making me feel terrible with dried tears and a little part of this fate being tarnished! Already too many things said and written. Yesterday itself one of my college mates Rahul Sarin wrote a beautiful blog post entitledThe day that should’ve never come ” Everything about the concert is already there, but I guess my blog post today is a bit more personal with respect to the concert and a few more extra things experienced by a guy like me who went to his first ever International Rock band concert. I thought of putting down my feelings in writings yesterday itself after getting back from the concert but I guess I didn’t even have the ‘time’ which could be known later from the post.

In retrospect, I recalled my blog post for December, 2008 about what went wrong on my Engineering Convocation Day. And after that series of fucked up incidents which had happened on that day I believed something sort of like that would never return. But as always I forget there is a guy called God. This time, it came with even worse. 28th October, 2011 is now tattooed indelibly as my worst day till date. Reason is only one which unfortunately is the very thought that I may never be able to watch Metallica play live-on-stage. I never had a girl friend on the first place to experience a heart ache for a break up, but I believe I wouldn’t be this heart broken even if I do have a girl friend and break up with her.!

The series of things that occurred on that fateful day are as follows.

1. The date 28th of any month has always been unlucky for me. Ieven conveyed the same to my friends upon which they assured me by saying something like – “Don’t you worry buddy. Metal Gods will cure this luck as well”

2. So excited I was for the concert, I couldn’t sleep properly at night. Plus, I slept the entire night without a pillow. Surely without my knowledge, the universe was slowly destroying my day.

3. Had my lunch but had this advice by other friends who went to many concerts that I shouldn’t be having much neither should I drink water much. Because, once you are inside a concert, one doesn’t risk coming out for pissing or having some snacks as going inside is an impossibility. I did know that also later in the day.

4. The worst part – taking a quick, rather quickest bath in cold water. Shit, that was horrible.

5. A metro train journey of 28 metro stations and that too almost standing the entire journey was again adding to my list of discomforts.

6. The gates were supposed to open at 3 o’clock. So, we reached there at 1:30 pm. For more than 2 hours we stood outside waiting for the gates to open. It was a horrible wait. We searched for some bars to get drinks but to no avail. There were some Manipuri kids who were drinking beers and vodkas just outside the gates and no one cares. I’m not complaining about it ‘coz the fans for such a Band should do crazy things. After all, why would someone include this band in the genre of “Thrash Metal”? Weeds were also commonly consumed by many a person.

7. The worst part was yet to follow. When we entered through Gate #2 it was a mayhem. I remember a few incidents that resemble like this and hich I personally have been to. First is Rajiv Chowk metro station, then Mumbai local train, then is Chennai Metro train and bus. In all of these, the rush was too much to even place my foot on. But the worse was this gate #2 where even the places we could place our foots were deadly ones, with pointed iron and even small pits. The event management is a difficult job but this was out of questions.

8.The checking point was a laughing stock. One wasn’t supposed to bring in cameras, bottles, drinks, cigarettes etc. We were to pass through 6-7 guards who frisked us checking for any banned substances. And I’m saying right now. I could have carried inside anything and they would never know. The tickets were not even checked. One guard took the ticket, tore it and gave me back. That’s it. No freaking sense of authenticity neither security. To add to the hilarious nature of the organizers, they were selling cigarettes inside the concert field…lol.

9. After I checked in, I ran like a crazy guy searching for my frens. The guard over there asked me to slow down and I was like WTF..!  Network was dead but somehow I found my friends sitting just near to the barricade…may be some 3 rows back. You can see the picture below.

The barricades at the Metallica Delhi Concert

You can see the barricades there which were broken and even those so called bouncers. Compare these bouncers with these ones. Ya, it would be lame to even consider the ones in this concert as bouncers. The foreigners seen in this picture were Iranian. They were so happy and towards the end I could see them so dejected.

10.  Then, one small part of the barricade was broken due to which the entire show  was cancelled. But that’s not the end of the story. After the breakage, the organizers were on stage asking everyone to take a giant step backwards. That’s all they did knowingly the crowd would never listen to them. Where were all those guards and bouncers.? Fuck the organizers. And the foreigner guy who used words like ‘fucking’ , ‘buttheads’ wasn’t solving the problem at all..!

11. After around 3 hours of waiting when sitting, standing was becoming hard, all I wished was a small sound of any instrument playing on stage whoever the person is. Imagine someone being on a rock concert and the ears are devoid of any single music. To add to the miseries, the side screen was playing the sound of Shah Rukh Khan for the F1 thing again and again. Screw him also.

12. Then the worst thing happened when they announced that the show was postponed to day after. That’s where the crowds went berserk, and getting worse, they even broke the stage and all. The announcers were like “Please, please.” But who wouldn’t go insane after such a mental torture.?

I went home totally heart broken. That point of time, I knew that the concert wouldn’t be just postponed. It would be cancelled also. And it did happen after a few hours. I don’t know why the event management group i.e., the DNA Networks thought that the was gonna be for some Akon or Shakira and not for a thrash metal band.

All in all a fucked up day and the curse for 28th day of a month is still there!
